Micrel's SONET/SDH 2x2 CML Crosspoint Switches Operate Up to 3Gbps From a 2.5V Supply

- Less than 2ps(rms) random jitter - Single version consumes 60% less power than alternative solutions - Operates from a supply voltage as low as 2.3V - Internal I/O termination

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Three new high-performance, CML crosspoint switches from Micrel meet OC-192, SONET/SDH jitter requirements. Micrel (Nasdaq: MCRL - news) is an industry leader in the design and manufacture of integrated circuits for high-speed communications, power management and analog markets.

Single 2x2 CML Crosspoint Switch

The 3 Gbps SY55854U is a single 2x2 CML crosspoint switch in a tiny 16-pin QSOP (4mm x 5mm) package. The device consumes 60% less power (44mA) than alternative solutions, and operates from a supply voltage as low as 2.3V. Output channel-to-channel skew is guaranteed to be less than 15ps over temperature and voltage.

Dual 2x2 CML Crosspoint Switches

For redundant switchover and fault tolerant applications, Micrel offers the SY55858U and SY55859L dual 2x2 CML crosspoint switches in 32-pin TQFP and 32-pin MLF packages, respectively.

The 3Gbps SY55858U is the first dual 2x2 crosspoint to include a flexible, 3-pin input stage. Access to the center-point of the input termination resistors allows a simple interface to DC-coupled or AC-Coupled CML and LVPECL input signals without the need for level shifting resistor networks in the signal path.

Differential CML outputs are optimized for 50-Ohm environments and include internal 50-Ohm source termination resistors. Jitter performance is extremely low-random jitter (RJ) is typically 2ps(rms), and deterministic jitter (DJ) is typically 5ps(pk-pk), making it an ideal choice for SONET/SDH applications from OC3 through OC192.

For applications that require a pin-for-pin, plug-compatible alternative to the Maxim MAX3840 dual 2x2 CML crosspoint switch, Micrel offers the SY55859L. Like the MAX3840, the 3.3V SY55859L operates up to 2.7Gbps and consumes less than 627mW over temperature with all outputs enabled. The Micrel SY55859L features a superior output stage that provides greater drive and swing. The result is a reduced Bit Error Rate (BER) with a wider, more open eye pattern.

The 16-pin QSOP SY55854U single 2x2 crosspoint switch is guaranteed over the industrial temperature range (-40degC to +85degC). Pricing starts at $13.85 when the device is purchased in a quantity of 1,000. Pricing for the SY55858U and SY55859L dual 2x2 crosspoint switches starts at $17.11 when purchased in a quantity of 1,000. Samples are available now, and production quantity leadtime is stock to 4 weeks (ARO).
